PSYCHOTHERAPY
WITH
JAY SWANSON
If you’re feeling troubled – whether in the long term or in a crisis – I’m here to help.
As a psychodynamic therapist, I have helped people with a wide range of problems - such as anxiety, both generalized and situational; various types and degrees of depression; complications of sexual orientation and gender identification; issues of self-regard, self-confidence and self esteem; difficulties forming, maintaining or exiting relationships; dissatisfaction at work; a sense of being unfulfilled in life. I have helped people who were troubled by more than one kind of problem and people who were not sure exactly what was troubling them.
I see therapy as a collaboration in which we regularly set aside time for the sole purpose of understanding your needs. Sessions are specifically intended to be opportunities for you to express yourself and to be heard. You can speak with me freely, in complete confidence, without the constraints we all encounter at times with the people in our lives — whether family members, chosen intimates, coworkers or acquaintances — or within ourselves.
I listen and respond — with empathy and without judgment — as you tell me about what troubles you and how it figures in your life. Because we are all individuals with unique experiences, we both need to understand what is troubling you in the context of your larger experience. I try to enter into your experience from your point of view, avoiding general assumptions and bearing in mind that the truth of our experience can lie beneath the surface or even outside of our consciousness.
The goals of therapy as I practice it are both to address what troubles you and to understand its causes. To do both, we need to explore your personal history and your inner experience in some depth — in important part by exploring your past relationships, including your earliest, formative relationships with caregivers.
In the short term, working together in this way can provide symptomatic relief. In the longer term, by helping you understand what causes your symptoms, it can prevent them from recurring. Identifying and addressing the root causes of your symptoms can yield long-term therapeutic benefit and personal growth, helping you lead a fuller, richer, freer life.
